Thanks largely to technical innovations at the time for tin tubes used to hold oil paints, in the late 1860s some artists were venturing away from the studio and discovering the beauty of using natural light to make oil paintings. In America, at this time, charming, scenic views were preferred by the impressionists as were well dressed members of high society all filled with pleasant, natural light.
