From 1865 to the outbreak of the First World War, the post-Civil War years, a small section of America began a period of runaway prosperity and decadence that became known as the gilded age. The nouveaux riche of this age spared no expense on lavish decorations and art. The art of this age both reflected and challenged the societal and political realities of what was truly a major period of transition for America.
